<featured-text>Ireland's Department of Finance has released its figures for October, showing major declines across the board -- particularly in Income Tax and Value-Added Tax. Unemployment is up dramatically and declines in earnings for those still in employment mean that 50% of workers are now outside the income tax net. The government had projected a decifit of €22bn in April based on revenues of €34.75bn but it now seems that figure was optimistic.

With the Fianna Fáil / Green Party government committed to not raising taxes, the stage is set for swingeing cutbacks in public expenditure and a long winter of discontent and industrial action. </featured-text>

<featured-text>The majority of NFL political donations are to the Republican party and the St. Louis Rams are the top Democratic NFL donating team. Recently, conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh made his intentions known that he is part of a group that wishes buy the St. Louis Rams. Naturally this is not bode well for American American player considering Rush's previous divisive comments. Even though he is from Missouri, it also seems like a bad idea to buy the most Democratic leaning team in the league. Rush has been dropped from the group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams.</featured-text>

<featured-text>UpMo conducted research to uncover the practices of people that get hired vs. those that stay searching in today's economy—the Job Hunters vs. the Job Farmers. Hunters are 87% more likely to find a job in this economy with key differences being in how they use their professional network and their qualitative approach to pursuing new opportunities. Other core differences between Hunters and Farmers: how they leverage their online profiles, reliance on job boards, maintenance of contact lists and customization within their job search. <featured-text>
There may be a silver lining in the cloud of recession. There's evidence that life expectancy increases during times of high unemployment.

This data shows the relationship between unemployment and life expectancy for the USA between 1960 and 2006. The following series are shown:

residual life expectancy - the difference between the actual and expected life expectancy, in lay-terms, how much longer people lived than they were expected to

unemployment % - the unemployment rate for the year

Each series is normalized to show how many standard deviations it is away from the mean so that the scale is comparable across both series (necessary because Swivel does not yet support two-axis graphs).

<featured-text>Testing of drinking water in Atchison, Kan., revealed atrazine levels in raw river water that closely tracked or even matched levels of the herbicide in drinking water processed with rapid sand filtration and only one level of carbon filtration. Alan Roberson at the American Water Works Association recommended multiple levels of carbon filtration for the effective removal of atrazine.

<featured-text>According to data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency and obtained through a public records request by the Huffington Post Investigative Fund, average annual Atrazine levels have surpassed federal safety limits in local drinking water systems on 10 occasions around the country over the past five years. Below, a listing of local water utilities that registered annual Atrazine levels above the 3 ppb limit. The data shows that two of the water systems exceeded the limit twice during the five-year period.
